He is describing a genuinely different product from the Slackbot most people remember, which was nothing but a keyword autoresponder. This one is a personal AI agent, built on Anthropic’s Claude, that searches across your channels, files and connected apps, summarises what it finds, prepares you for meetings and takes actions on your behalf.

The first question every business leader asks is what it costs. The second, usually about a month later, is why it isn’t working. Those two questions are more closely related than they look. Slackbot surfaces only what the individual user is already permitted to view: public channels, the private channels they belong to, and their own direct messages. That permissions model is exactly right, and it is also the source of the most common disappointment. If your institutional knowledge, the decisions, the reasoning, the answers people actually need, live in private channels and DMs, then Slackbot cannot help the majority of your organisation.

Worse, two colleagues will ask the same question and get materially different answers because they can see different things. That is not a model failure. It is a knowledge architecture failure that AI has simply made visible.

The failure mode after that is confident wrongness. Slack publishes a help article on identifying hallucinations, which notes that they are often plausible-sounding and delivered confidently, and that if Slackbot tells you it does not know something and you simply ask again without giving it new information, it is likely to start hallucinating in order to give you an answer you will be satisfied with. An agent placed over an undocumented organisation does not report a gap. It fills it.
